Summer in DC just got more inventive.
A Snarkitecture-Designed Wonderland Lands in the Great Hall
The National Building Museum has announced THE PLAYGROUND, a monumental immersive installation opening July 3 and running through August 30, 2026. New York design firm Snarkitecture, known for transforming familiar environments into memorable sensory experiences, has designed the project as a space to climb, build, gather, and create.
“Playgrounds are where so many of us first experience creativity, exploration, independence, and community,” said Aileen Fuchs, president and executive director of the National Building Museum. “As the nation prepares to celebrate America’s 250th anniversary, THE PLAYGROUND is a reminder of the important role public spaces play in bringing people together.”
The Great Hall, the museum’s signature columned interior, becomes a canvas for imagination across the season.
Public Programs Built for Play, Sport, and Curiosity
Programming runs across the full summer season at THE PLAYGROUND. Late Nights bring live music, food, and drinks to the Great Hall. Hard Hat Tours go behind the scenes of the installation. Hands-on workshops center movement, creativity, and design thinking.
Families can join weekly Storytimes, Building Readers Club gatherings, STEAM Saturdays, and drop-in artmaking sessions throughout the run. Moreover, the lineup is intentionally intergenerational. Caregivers and children learn together. Adults reconnect with creative play. DC residents gain a fresh summer destination just blocks from the National Mall. Program details, dates, and registration are posted on the museum’s website!
Major Sponsors Power a Citywide Summer Moment
Amazon and Nike Grind anchor the project as Presenting+ Sponsors of THE PLAYGROUND. Major support has been provided by the DowntownDC Business Improvement District and the District of Columbia Executive Office of the Mayor, through the Office of the Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development.
Additional backers include Monumental Sports, AIA, the American Society of Landscape Architects, and Milwaukee Tool. Consequently, the collective investment reflects the museum’s role as a civic anchor in downtown DC. Public-private partnerships of this scale rarely come together for a single summer installation. Visitors benefit directly. Ticket and admission information has been posted at nbm.org.
