The Sun, the first half of Andrea Limauro’s (Insta@) two-part mural The Sun & The Moon, now glows on the north wall of the 12th Street S underpass beneath Route 1 in National Landing, with The Moon due on the south wall in spring 2027.
A Busy Underpass Gets a Burst of Color
Commissioned by the National Landing BID, the mural uses the underpass beams as rays of light fanning out from a radiant sun. Look closely for regional landmarks, including Reagan National Airport, the Lincoln Memorial, the George Washington Masonic National Memorial, and the Smithsonian Castle. It reads bold from a car or bus window and rewards anyone on foot with the details.
Meet the Artist Behind the Sun
Andrea Limauro is an artist and city planner who won a curated mural competition advised by Third Space Creative and the Museum of Contemporary Art Arlington. “This is an opportunity to turn an everyday passageway in National Landing into something that sparks curiosity,” Limauro said. Students from George Washington University’s Women’s Leadership Program helped prep the site.
Why the Mural Matters for National Landing
The timing tracks with the new Crystal Drive and 12th Street transitway, which Metrobus route A1X began using on September 13, 2026. The mural joins a growing art trail that includes Lisa Marie Thalhammer’s Harmony at Crystal City Metro Plaza and J.D. Deardourff’s Wavves near the Mount Vernon Trail.
Find the mural where 12th Street S passes beneath Route 1 in Arlington, near the 12th St S at Long Bridge Dr bus stop. It is free to view from the sidewalk, and daylight shows off the details best. Planning a group outing nearby? Concorde’s chef-driven venue in National Landing is worth a look.
