A Visually Stunning World Transports You to Broadway Golden Age

The visual storytelling in this iteration of Guys and Dolls creates an immediate and lasting impact. Director Francesca Zambello has modernized the entry into this world by starting us in a nonprofit thrift shop, acting as a clever portal that sweeps the audience into the neon-lit, fast-paced streets of 1930s New York.

The scenic design by Walt Spangler is most impressive, utilizing a stage that really lets itself immerse you in the action with incredible moving parts that keep the energy high. It is a brilliant backdrop for the classic Frank Loesser score, allowing the iconic streetscapes and nightclubs to feel vibrant and alive. The transition from the stark reality of the present to the technicolor joyfulness of Damon Runyon’s world makes this one of the most visually dynamic shows to see at the Shakespeare Theatre Company.

Leading Players Bring Massive Vocals and Undeniable Chemistry

The casting for these iconic roles is nothing short of perfection. Julie Benko, celebrated for her work in Funny Girl and Harmony, brings a nuanced and powerful vocal performance to Sarah Brown, grounding the character with a blend of determination and romantic longing.

Opposite her, Jacob Dickey is a revelation as Sky Masterson, offering a confident, commanding baritone that suits the score perfectly. This is the musical where we get the legendary number “Luck be a lady tonight!” and he delivers it with such swagger and precision that it brings down the house! Their interactions provide the emotional anchor for the show, balancing the high-stakes gambling with a genuinely persuasive romance that lights up the stage.

Hayley Podschun is absolute dynamite as Miss Adelaide, bringing a resume that includes Wicked and a Helen Hayes Award nomination at Arena Stage. She lights up the stage during “A Bushel and a Peck.” She is joined by Kyle Taylor Parker as Nicely-Nicely Johnson, who effectively stops the show with a rousing rendition of “Sit Down, You’re Rockin’ the Boat.”

Ensemble Delivers for Guys and Dolls

A musical like Guys and Dolls relies heavily on the strength of its supporting players, and this cast is stacked with talent. Calvin McCullough gives a very great performance as Benny Southstreet, showcasing great range and impeccable timing that ensures he delivers memorable humor in every scene. The movement on stage is equally compelling; Jack Sippel, the Swing and Dance Captain, is an incredible dancer who ensures the choreography remains sharp and kinetic. He is matched by the incredible movement and stage presence of Nick Alvino, while Chivas Merchant-Buckman delivers a great performance that is highly noticeable and distinct. The depth of this ensemble ensures that the bustling world of high-rollers and missionaries feels electric and constantly engaging.

Plus! Help Give Back to the Community

This production captures the true spirit of the show by extending its themes of redemption beyond the footlights. In honor of the charitable nature of Sarah Brown, the theatre is partnering with One Warm Coat to host a Winter Coat Drive at Harman Hall. It is a wonderful opportunity to enjoy top-tier entertainment while helping neighbors in need by donating new or lightly used warm clothing. Whether you are a longtime fan of the Golden Age of Broadway or seeing this story for the first time, this production offers a spectacular night out that honors the legacy of the musical while feeling fresh and exciting!

“With a commanding cast and a set that immerses you in the neon glow of Broadway, this production of Guys and Dolls is a high-stakes win for Washington DC theatre.”
