If you simply must experience live musical theater in Washington DC this month, it has to be Chez Joey.
Experience a Musical Triumph in DC
Head over to the waterfront before March 15th for an absolute triumph of performance and production. Arena Stage is currently hosting the phenomenal Chez Joey, a show that pulses with undeniable energy and vocal prowess. Tony Award winner Myles Frost, celebrated for his role in MJ the Musical, delivers a stellar, charismatic performance as the ferociously ambitious Joey Evans seeking his “true sound.” This production reimagines the original Pal Joey by setting it during the dynamic 1940s Chicago Black Renaissance, brought to vibrant life by co-directors Savion Glover and Tony Goldwyn!
The classic Rodgers & Hart songbook feels completely reborn and more technical within the underground glow of Lucille’s Southside jazz club.
Witness Unforgettable Vocal Performances
While Frost is a major draw, the women of this cast provide the show’s essential heart and emotional depth. Special recognition must go to Awa Sal Secka, who pours immense soul into her arrangements and serves as Joey’s musical compass. Her Act Two reprise of the timeless “My Heart Stood Still” is simply incredible and demands extended applause every night! Furthermore, Angela Hall provides an amazing foundation of jazz talent, flawlessly engaging the audience from precise tap dancing to powerful vocals.
Immerse Yourself in Savion Glover’s Rhythm
The movement on stage is just as compelling as the music, driven by Savion Glover’s legendary and distinct choreographic style. The incredible dance cast creates a fun, kinetic sisterhood layer that elevates every scene they inhabit. We were blown away by the ensemble work of Charis Michelle, Kalen Robinson, Ndaya Dream Hoskins, Alana S. Thomas, and Brooke Taylor. Their energy is infectious and perfectly captures the spirit of the Chicago Black Renaissance setting. This production successfully cracks open an American classic to reveal a sonic world that feels electric and vital for today’s audience.
We definitely recommend securing tickets for a performance at Arena Stage before this limited run concludes; you will not be disappointed!
