Preakness 2026 lands at Laurel Park on May 15–16, and the home team is showing out!
What Preakness 2026 Means to American Horse Racing
The Preakness Stakes is the middle jewel of the Triple Crown, sandwiched between the Kentucky Derby and the Belmont Stakes. Notably, it runs two weeks after the Derby and three weeks before Belmont.
The Preakness is older than the Derby by two years, first contested in 1873. At 1 3/16 miles, it is also shorter and tighter than the Derby’s 1¼ miles. That distance shift changes everything. While the Derby rewards deep closers in chaotic 20-horse fields, Preakness 2026 rewards horses who control the pace in a smaller, tactical field capped at 14 starters.
Past winners include Secretariat, Seattle Slew, Affirmed, American Pharoah, and Justify — names that anchor American sporting history.
Why Preakness 2026 Is a Must-Attend Event
This year the race moves to Laurel Park (closer to DC!) for the first time ever, because Pimlico Race Course is undergoing a $400 million redevelopment and returns in 2027. Translation: Preakness 2026 is a one-of-one. Meanwhile, Golden Tempo and trainer Cherie DeVaux just took the 2026 Kentucky Derby — making her the first woman to win the Run for the Roses. Whether Golden Tempo ships to Laurel remains undecided. Still, the field stacks up with fresh shooters!
Preakness watchers are tracking Maryland-based Taj Mahal (undefeated at Laurel, winner of the Federico Tesio by 8¼ lengths), Iron Honor (Chad Brown’s Gotham Stakes winner), Chip Honcho (Steve Asmussen-trained Gun Runner Stakes winner), Crude Velocity (Bob Baffert), and Silent Tactic. Post positions draw Monday, May 11.
Preakness 2026 Delivers a Full Day of Racing, Music, and Maryland Pride
Preakness 2026 Weekend is a two-day festival, not just a race. First, Friday delivers the Black-Eyed Susan Stakes — the premier Grade 2 stakes for fillies, won in 2025 by Margie’s Intention.
Then Saturday brings 14 races. The Preakness post time hits around 6:50 p.m. ET. Afterward, Preakness LIVE (formerly InfieldFest) wraps the day in concerts, DJs, and food vendors, with past headliners ranging from Jack Harlow to Bruno Mars.
Tents pour bourbon, mint juleps, and Maryland’s signature Black-Eyed Susan cocktail. Additionally, local vendors like Jimmy’s Seafood and Atlas Restaurant Group anchor the menu. NBC and CNBC carry the broadcast live, and Peacock streams it.
Giant Food Stitches Petals Into Preakness 2026 History

The middle jewel of the Triple Crown wears a hometown crown. For 29 consecutive years, Giant Food florists have hand-built the floral victory blankets that drape the winners of the Preakness Stakes and the Black-Eyed Susan Stakes. Giant recently earned a 90th anniversary Milestone Award from the Restaurant Association Metropolitan Washington.
Every blanket packs 5,000 to 8,000 fresh stems. Five to eight in-store florists then stitch each one together. The work demands roughly eight hours of careful hands. Some florists have been threading petals into Maryland sports history for more than 20 years.
The blanket construction happens at Giant Food on York Road in Baltimore the day before each race — a working studio of tradition, precision, and Maryland pride.
