Giant Food is helping local families this holiday season.
The DMV’s leading grocer, Giant Food, is showing its deep community roots by teaming up with the DC United Foundation for a massive holiday meal giveaway. Together, they are providing 1,000 complete holiday meal kits to furloughed federal workers and DC residents impacted by SNAP changes. This partnership aims to ensure families across the region can gather for a soul-warming Thanksgiving dinner. Each kit is packed with essentials, including a turkey breast, fresh produce, non-perishable sides, and a Giant Food gift card.
Here is how to get your meal kit
Securing a holiday meal kit is designed to be straightforward for those who qualify. Federal workers and SNAP recipients can reserve one of the 1,000 kits starting November 7. Reservations must be made using this sign-up form. Once your reservation is confirmed, the pickup day is set for November 25 at the Giant Food located at 1400 Seventh St. NW, ensuring you have everything just in time for the holiday.
Local DC chefs add restaurant-level flavor
This giveaway comes with a special touch from Washington DC’s vibrant food scene. Giant has partnered with three of the city’s premier chefs to provide exclusive recipes and custom-created spice rubs, which will be distributed at random with the meal kits. Recipients will get to prepare a restaurant-worthy meal using a classic American blend from Benjamin Lambert (The Occidental), an island-inspired recipe from Lonie Murdock (Isla), or an Indian-inspired tandoori mix from Sanjay Mandhaiya (Pappe and Karravaan).
The community support goes even further
This effort is part of a much larger holiday commitment. Giant Food is also providing thousands of whole turkeys, turkey breasts, and pumpkin pies to all five major Feeding America Food Banks in the area, including the Capital Area Food Bank. Ira Kress, President of Giant Food, emphasized that community has been at the heart of the company for nearly 90 years. Shanell Mosley of the DC United Foundation added they are honored to team up for their neighbors. Washington DC residents interested in helping can join the Lend a Hand for Hunger campaign by rounding up their purchase at any Giant store to support local food banks. Reservations must be made using this sign-up form.
