A vibrant, joyful production that transforms Shakespeare into local neighborhood storytelling for the many identities of our DC neighborhoods — Folger Theatre’s As You Like It is fundamental theatre at its best.

A Love Letter to DC Culture Takes the Stage on Capitol Hill

Folger Theatre’s As You Like It transforms Shakespeare’s beloved comedy into a vibrant celebration of the duality of Washington DC, running now through April 12 at the Folger Shakespeare Library on Capitol Hill. Envisioned by Artistic Director Karen Ann Daniels and directed by Timothy Douglas, this production — thanks in much to dramaturg Otis Ramsey-Zöe — reimagines the Forest of Arden as the real DC.

Director Douglas describes Arden as a rehearsal space for new ways of being, where hierarchies soften, exiles become philosophers, and fools become truth-tellers. He grounds the production in the spirit with Go-Go rhythms echoing through summer streets, the front-porch philosophy, the protest and praise that have long defined communities from Anacostia to U Street. For Douglas, if Arden is a rehearsal for a better world, then DC has long been staging that rehearsal.

Shakespeare Meets DC’s Fight for Self-Determination

Dramaturg Otis Ramsey-Zöe anchors the production in a question that belongs uniquely to Washington DC — who has the right to self-govern? Ramsey-Zöe draws a direct line between Shakespeare’s court and our Capitol City. In this production, the court represents the cookie-cutter federal system, and Arden represents the residential “realness” and a cultural city that locals know and love.

The characters who flee into the forest mirror DC’s own ongoing push for autonomy — people seeking freedom, claiming their own identity, and building community on their own terms.

Nikkole Salter commands the stage as Jaques, delivering Shakespeare’s famous “all the world’s a stage” monologue with gravity that stays with you long after the curtain falls. Sabrina Lynne Sawyer brings infectious energy as Celia, holding scenes together with sharp comedic timing and genuine warmth. John Sygar (@jsyg) is the sugar on top — his guitar playing, singing, and humor make him a triple threat! Tsilala Brock (@tsilalabrock) gives Rosalind the full depth she deserves, while Terrance Fleming (@teeerrance) and Manu Kumasi (@manu.kumasi) round out an ensemble that uses every inch of the Folger’s intimate Elizabethan-style theatre, performing in the aisles and upper seating areas to pull the audience right into Arden.

Creative Design Brings Shakespeare to Life in Washington DC

The set design alone is worth the trip — scenic designer Gisela Estrada builds a neoclassical facade that drops to reveal a warm, communal space inspired by Malcolm X Park and everyday DC block parties. Composer KOKAYI draws from DC’s deep musical roots across Go-Go, jazz, R&B, and hip hop, while costume designer Celeste Jennings (@celestejenn) shifts the wardrobe from buttoned-up Capitol Hill tailoring to bright, individualistic pieces with West African influences.

Lighting designer Minjoo Kim delivers what Director Douglas calls “quite delicious” reveals, and sound designer Miki Vale sets the tone with an original opening number that gives the show a late-night variety feel!
