For the past 60 days, my exploration has been confined to my own kitchen, meticulously crafting meals of ribeye, chicken thighs, bacon, eggs, salmon, and shrimp as I’ve embraced the carnivore diet.
And let me tell you, it’s been an incredible journey. I’ve been hunkering down, focusing on cleaner eating, and I’m proud to say I’ve seen some amazing health benefits, including shedding about 19 pounds! But now, with just about 20 days left until I officially break my fast, my mind is wandering. I’ve been daydreaming about the textures, the flavors, and the pure joy of a more diverse culinary landscape.
This “cheat day” plan will be a carefully curated re-entry into the world of flavor, a celebration of conquering a significant health habit. So, for those who’ve ever embarked on a restrictive diet, or just need a truly indulgent cheat day in Washington DC, this list is for you. And trust me, if you’re on the carnivore diet, I’d love to hear your thoughts on what you’re craving!
Here’s my must-have list for my post-carnivore diet feast in our amazing city:
Kicking Things Off: Appetizers I’ve Missed
First up, I’m craving those crispy, savory bites. Korean wings at KoChix are high on the list. And for some truly authentic lumpia, I’m heading straight to Purple Patch or Doi Moi. The thought of that perfectly fried wrapper and savory filling has been a constant companion. I’m also looking forward to truffle parm tots and fresh popcorn from Atlantic Plumbing Cinema. Oh, and Mission Navy Yard’s loaded waffle fries with everything on them, please!
A Long-Awaited Return to Asian Delights
Good Chinese food has been sorely missed. My go-to for classic comfort is Panda Gourmet in NE D.C. I’ll be diving into their combination lo mein for sure! For something a bit more upscale and refined, Philippe Chow DC is calling my name. Their elegant take on Chinese cuisine will be a welcome luxury. Oh, and Tiger Fork – something is always amazing there.
The Glorious Comeback of Pizza
Oh, pizza. How I’ve longed for you! Andy’s Pizza holds a special place for their pepperoni with those wonderfully thick-cut, cupped pepperonis – you know the kind, right? They’re pure perfection. Of course, I’ll also be considering Menomale and Timber Pizza Company for their incredible pies.
Beyond the Usual: Unique Flavors and Sweet Indulgences
I’m excited to explore Pappe’s Samosas and their new spot, Karravaan, for those aromatic, savory za’atar fries with tahini aioli & harissa ketchup.
And then there’s chocolate. After 60 days, I’m ready for some serious indulgence. My destination is Arcay Chocolates at Union Market. I’ve been eyeing that infamous Dubai chocolate bar for what feels like serious FOMO! For ice cream, I’m a chunky-texture kind of guy, so Van Leeuwen Ice Cream and their brown butter chocolate chip cookie dough is at the top of my list. Oh, and I need the watermelon salad from Lupo Verde with cucumber, red onions, blueberries, balsamic glaze, and focaccia croutons, please!
Pasta, Sandwiches, and Pastries Galore!
A trip to Osteria Morini in Navy Yard for truly handmade pasta is a non-negotiable. Ragu Meatballs, Pork Braciola & Italian Sausage Slow-Cooked in a Rich Tomato Sauce Fried from Carmine’s – And! Their Basque Cheesecake is the best! The thought of fresh, perfectly al dente pasta has been a persistent craving.
For a savory sandwich fix, I’m also eyeing the Spicy Fried Chicken from Love, Makoto with shiso coleslaw, Japanese mustard, shichimi Togarashi and a buttered house made bun. Ghostburger is another strong contender, or Bluejacket’s Fried Chicken Sandwich with coleslaw, pickles, potato roll, with a choice of: buffalo, mumbo sauce, or sweet & smoky dry rub. And let’s not forget Doro Soul Food’s Ethiopian Fried Chicken sandwich, which is also on my radar. And since I’m at it, I might as well grab a chicken sandwich and a doughnut from Astro Doughnuts & Fried Chicken!
And for all things baked and glorious, the list is extensive:
↦ Ted’s Bulletin for their unique pop tart.
↦ Bread Furst on Connecticut Ave. for their artisanal breads and pastries.
↦ Seylou, Pluma, and Tatte Bakery for their delightful selections.
↦ SakuSaku Flakerie on Connecticut Ave. for what I hear are truly amazing baked goods.
↦ And of course, the D.C. staples: Baked & Wired in Georgetown and Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams (my personal favorite!).
Yes, I Will Have Fries with That
I love Peacock Cafe’s shoestring fries in Georgetown. And I’m a total dope for Five Guys fries, with a quart of ketchup please! And don’t forget Shake Shack’s crinkle fries with cheese.
Sushi and the Grand Finale of Desserts
For an exquisite sushi experience, I’m planning a visit to SHŌTŌ. The delicate flavors and artistry will be a welcome change. Zeppelin, The Square (specifically Kiyomi Sushi by Uchi at The Square), and Kusshi Glover Park are also on my radar for top-tier sushi.
And for the ultimate dessert grand finale, it’s a toss-up between the classic Key lime pie at Clyde’s Restaurant in Georgetown, or perhaps from Truluck’s in Chinatown – or the rich, satisfying carrot cake at Ocean Prime. As a hospitality expert, I know DC steakhouses often hide some of the city’s best dessert secrets!
