The MICHELIN Guide just named seven DC hotels to its 2026 Key list, and the capital’s hotel scene has never looked more serious.

The Michelin Key Is the Hotel World’s Version of the Michelin Star

Michelin announced its very first Key hotels in the United States on April 24, 2024, giving hotels the same kind of honor restaurants get with Stars. Keys are handed out after anonymous inspector stays, with One Key marking a “very special stay,” Two Keys an exceptional one, and Three Keys an extraordinary one. Inspectors judge hotels on five criteria, including architecture and interior design, consistency of service, personality and character, and value for the price.

The 2026 global selection was unveiled September 18, and 470 new hotels in 79 destinations were added, bringing the worldwide total to 2,832, according to Forbes contributor Bailey Berg. Only 155 hotels on the planet hold Three Keys. Across the United States, 65 new Keys pushed the national count to 359 hotels.

Here Are the Seven DC Hotels on the 2026 Michelin Key List

Three DC properties hold Two Keys, namely The Jefferson, Rosewood Washington DC in Georgetown, and The Hay-Adams, which was promoted from One Key this year.

Four more hold One Key, including Riggs Washington DC, Eaton DC, Pendry Washington DC at The Wharf, and the newly added Fairmont Washington DC Gold Experience, per the official 2026 MICHELIN Guide United States Key list.

Widen the map and the count grows. The Inn at Little Washington in Virginia holds Two Keys, Salamander Resort and Spa in Middleburg holds One, and Baltimore adds the Two-Key Ivy Hotel and the One-Key Pendry Baltimore. That puts 11 Key hotels within about a 90-minute drive of the Capitol.

We Agree With the Picks, but DC Still Deserves a Three-Key Hotel

The list gets range right. Old guard Washington is represented by The Jefferson and The Hay-Adams, whose promotion was overdue! The Eaton and Pendry show the younger, livelier city that has grown up around K Street and the Southwest Waterfront.

But! No DC hotel holds Three Keys, while New York claims four of the 15 Three-Key hotels in the country. Seven Keys is a strong showing. A Three-Key hotel would make the capital a true destination stay. What do you think, and where should it be?
