The best orchestra in the world reminded Washington why live classical music still matters.
A Packed Stage and a Sold Out Concert Hall
The Vienna Philharmonic returned to the Trump Kennedy Center Concert Hall on Wednesday, March 4, 2026, and delivered one of the most powerful classical music performances DC has seen this season. Grammy Award–winning conductor Andris Nelsons led a massive ensemble — more than 30 violists, at least 8 bass players, 2 harps, and a stage overflowing with world-class musicians — through a program that earned multiple standing ovations from a captivated audience.
Strauss and Sibelius Like You’ve Never Heard Them
The evening opened with Richard Strauss’ Also sprach Zarathustra, its famous rising horns filling the Concert Hall with an electricity you could feel in your chest. Sibelius’ Symphony No. 2 followed, its lush, arching melodies building to a finale that left the audience on its feet. Founded in 1842 in Austria, the Vienna Philharmonic is celebrated for its legendary “Viennese Sound,” a tonal quality passed from generation to generation through a democratic structure where every artistic decision — from repertoire to conductors — is made by the musicians themselves. Conductor Andris Nelsons, who also serves as Music Director of the Boston Symphony Orchestra and Gewandhauskapellmeister of the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig, brought a commanding presence and deep musical vision that elevated every note!
