Romance is officially back in the capital city!

The District Puckers Up for History

History was made yesterday at Anthem Row as the DowntownDC Business Improvement District successfully shattered a world record. A staggering 1,435 couples gathered to share a simultaneous kiss, officially breaking the GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS™ title for the most couples kissing underneath the mistletoe. The electrifying moment lasted for five perfect seconds, decimating the previous record of 480 couples held by Anheuser-Busch in St. Louis. Guinness representatives were on-site to verify the numbers, confirming that DC has firmly taken the crown from Missouri with a display of affection that filled the streets!

Aerial Art Sets The Romantic Scene

The backdrop for this record-breaking smooch was the breathtaking National Mistletoe, a 10-foot aerial installation suspended 30 feet in the air. Designed by the visionary My Ly Design, the installation transforms the corridor into a canopy of greenery, blooms, and ribbons centered around a massive jingle bell. This is the second year this unique aerial art has graced Anthem Row, turning the urban fabric into a haven for connection and festive joy. The design perfectly captures the spirit of placemaking, creating an unforgettable visual anchor for the thousands of participants who turned out to be part of history.

A Celebration of Local Flavor and Sound

The festivities kicked off well before the 4:15 PM kiss with a vibrant mix of entertainment and local fare. Hosts Sherrell Duncan from WPGC 95.5 and Rod Hendrix from 94.7 The Drive kept the energy high while the Ellington Carthan Quartet featuring Valentina Maria provided a soulful live soundtrack. Participants fueled up for the big moment with food and drink from neighborhood staples City Tap House and (Westin DC) Root & Vine, enjoying the lively atmosphere of live art and photobooths. The energy at Anthem Row proved that Washington is a city that knows how to celebrate together.

Community Spirit Shines Brightest

While the record title is a massive achievement, the true success was seeing the community unite in the heart of the city. DowntownDC President and CEO Gerren Price noted that “Events like this bring people together in such a memorable, joyful way and show the true vibrancy and energy in the city that we love.” This event highlighted the dynamic future of the neighborhood, showcasing its 140 walkable blocks as a premier destination for thrill-seekers and romantics alike!
