Washington, DC (March 17, 2011) – The smooth sounds of Jazz make a return this spring and summer at Mandarin Oriental “Weekend Jazz” free concert series. They will feature entertainment by top jazz vocalists from Washington D.C. and beyond. Beautiful sunset views of the Potomac, and cooling District breezes provide the perfect backdrop for the fun, free concert series held on in the Empress Lounge.

“Weekend Jazz” takes place on Friday and Saturday evenings from 8pm – midnight beginning in March 18th, 2011.
This Friday, the Empress Lounge is proud to present the Sharón Clark Quartet. Ms. Clark is a vocalist, and will be joined by Chris Grasso on piano, Tommy Cecil on bass, and Chuck Redd on drums.
Ms. Clark has headlined the Duke Ellington Jazz Festival on the National Mall and the historic Lincoln Theater. The Cape May Jazz Festival has hosted Ms. Clark three times by popular demand. She has toured Republic of Kyrgyzstan and Russia multiple times. Ms. Clark has also been the featured vocalist with the Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra and the Richmond Symphony. The Ludacris Foundation chose Ms. Clark as its featured jazz vocalist in its 2009 tribute to Quincy Jones.
Back by popular demand, vocalist/bassist Nicki Parrott joins DC favorite Chuck Redd on vibes. Nicki came to New York in May 1994 on an Arts Council grant from her native Australia to study with the internationally acclaimed bassist, Rufus Reid. In June 2000, she began performing on Monday nights at the Iridium Jazz Club with the legendary guitarist and inventor, Les Paul. Their partnership continued until his recent death. She has appeared the world over at major festivals and concert halls.
Chuck Redd began performing and recording internationally when he joined the Charlie Byrd Trio in 1980 at the age of 21. That year, he also joined the Great Guitars (Barney Kessel, Charlie Byrd and Herb Ellis.) To his credit are thirteen extensive European tours and five tours of Japan, with the Barney Kessel Trio, Ken Peplowski, Terry Gibbs and Conte Candoli.
The lounge offers light fare and a complete bar menu. Get there early and enjoy the posh Empress Lounge’s unique happy hour. Featuring a complete bar menu, light fare and live entertainment, the lounge is an oasis of civility perched on the edge of the most powerful city in the world. Also, during their happy hour, from 5:30 pm – 7:30 pm, listen to Donato Soviero on guitar this Friday.
This year’s concerts will be on Friday and Saturday, March 18-19; Friday and Saturday, March 25-26; Friday and Saturday, April 1-2; Friday and Saturday, April 8-9; Friday and Saturday, April 15-16; Friday and Saturday, May 6-7; and Friday and Saturday, June 3-4, 2011.
