Quill Cocktail Competition Returns July 10

Washington, DC (July 8, 2011) – Its inspired mix of classic concoctions and signature drinks has made Quill, the elegant lounge at The Jefferson, Washington, DC, a treasured enclave for those in search of the enlightened cocktail.

This summer, local mixologists are again invited to step behind Quill’s famed orange bar to demonstrate their prowess. On July 10, 2011, six of the capital’s finest drink dons will prove their worth with Tequila Ocho Plata Single Estate at the third Quill Cocktail Competition.

The Bartenders that will participate are; Dean Feddaoui who is the Beverage Manager for the Beacon Hotel, Clinton Terry is the Mixologist at PX Cafe, Joe Cleveland is the bartender at Oyamel, JC Caceres who is a mixologist consultant and Bourbon Steak, and Patrick Owens, who is from Bourbon.

Tequila Ocho Los Corrales - 2010 Single Estate. Because of the time it takes an agave to mature, each estate cannot be replenished for almost ten years after each harvest, thus making each vintage of Ocho a rare and collectable tequila.

Quill will challenge the barkeeps to demonstrate their creativity and talent by crafting an original drink around the carefully constructed tequila spirit. Each bartender will be given 20 minutes to mix their cocktail and present it to the six judges while introducing their respective establishments and answering questions.

Judges will score each drink according to a list of criteria including creativity, taste and appearance, with the collective opinion of the guests in attendance serving as the (potentially tie-breaking) seventh vote.

One of the judges will be yours truly, Michael Woestehoff, the Washington Lobbyist. The other judges are Fiona Zublin from Washington Post Express, Matté Massimiliano of Umami Improvement, and Daniela Solis Palomera of the Tequila Regulatory Council.

The victor will receive a one-night stay at The Jefferson, with dinner for two in the hotel’s fine dining restaurant, Plume, a bottle of Tequila Ocho Plata, Resposdao, and Anejo, and dinner for four at Oyamel, considered one of the capital’s finest restaurants for authentic and creative Mexican cuisine.
