Washington, DC (July 24, 2013) – DC’s cocktail scene has changed immensely over the last several decades and even just years, and U Street’s Vinoteca is exploring what DC is now drinking with its “DC’s Cocktail Culture” cocktail class on Tuesday, July 30th. Led by Vinoteca mixologist Horus Alvarez, the hands-on cocktail class will cover cocktail-making basics, explore DC’s cocktail culture before and after prohibition, highlight locally-made spirits and showcase the cocktails Washington is drinking now.
Heavily involved in DC’s cocktail scene, Alvarez is affiliated with the DC Craft Bartender’s Guild and has a finger to the pulse on what Washingtonians are sipping. As part of Vinoteca‘s seasonal series of wine classes, Alvarez decided to introduce the restaurant’s first-ever cocktail class, tying into the cocktail craze sweeping the country. Starting with prohibition, he will explore what the District’s bar scene was like before and after, and introduce DC’s signature cocktail, the Rickey.
Alvarez will then cover cocktail-making basics, showcase a variety of locally-distilled spirits such as Green Hat Gin and Wasmund’s Whisky, and then explore the “revolution of mixology” in the District and beyond. He will show examples of the innovation and trends in cocktails today, like barrel-aged sips and infused spirits, as well as mix up classics like the Old Fashioned.
An opportunity to not only enjoy, but learn about good cocktails, Vinoteca‘s cocktail class will take place on Tuesday, July 30 from 7pm – 9pm in the restaurant’s upstairs lounge. The intimate class will explore and pour four different cocktails, and include light food pairings from Executive Chef Lonnie Zoeller as well as a $5 gift card to come back and enjoy more cocktails at Vinoteca.
The cocktail class is $50 per person plus tax. Space is very limited so reservations are encouraged and can be made by calling (202) 332-9463 or emailing email@example.com.
