Review: The Green Pig Bistro Clarendon

Clarendon, Arlington, VA (July 10, 2012) – Just off Clarendon Boulevard and onto North Filmore Street, there is a new restaurant called Green Pig Bistro. Opened by a former pastry chef, Scot Harlan has created a low-country menu that is sure to satisfy any taste. Harlan holds an impressive resume, holding down the fort at the Inn at Little Washington, and has worked with Daniel Boulud at Daniel, David Bouley at Bouley and Gordon Ramsay at The London.
It is easy to like a place like this. The staff is friendly and helpful, willing to check on the table and full of information regarding the fresh local produce and protein on the menu.
The interior has a comfortable feel, despite the heavy use of concrete, it is clean and modern, with a focus to the kitchen, as you can see it from every seat. Notable interior designer Nicole Facciuto‘s provides an eco-friendly environment and has appeared on various shows like, “Restaurant: Impossible“, A&E’s “Fix This Kitchen” and HGTV’s “Red Hot and Green.” The wallpaper is made from pages from Julia Child’s cookbooks and luscious light fabrics upholster comfortable nooks.
Now to the menu.
Drinks are moderately priced, and frankly, everything else is as well. Pimm’s Punch is refreshing (appreciated these days). This is made with Pimm’s Liqueur, Orange-Rose Wine Aperitf, Sparkling English Lemonade and the McRita is a bourbon-based and grapefruit take on the margarita.
The reverence to simple flavors will leave you smiling throughout the entire meal. To start, request the sea-salted cornbread with the maple butter. It is served in a warm skillet and sliced like a pie. If you think wedding cake is the supposed to gestate the best moment of your life, then you haven’t had this cornbread.
There are snacks to begin, like three crispy pig tacos with avocado or the snail and mushroom served on thick toast. Try the farm-fresh tomato salad with thick chunks of watermelon, basil, baby green tomatoes, served on smooth goat cheese. For the mains, there is the rockfish with first corn and succotash (kidney beans) or the never-a-wrong-decision bacon cheeseburger. This is made with 2/3 burger and 1/3 bacon. It’s is one of the best things to have.
They also have daily dinner specials. As it was Monday, fried chicken was offered. For only $20, you get two large pieces of catfish-fried chicken, and two sides like macaroni and cheese and greens with a biscuit all served in a divided Le Creuset platter. And you even get dessert. Dessert, like the butterscotch pudding with chocolate and pecans will restore your faith in humanity and the homemade doughnut with peanut-butter ice-cream and chocolate drizzle will make you so overcome with joy, you might want to call your mother to tell her you found “the one.”
