The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS) today announced that the 29th annual Leukemia Ball, presented by PhRMA, raised more than $3.2 million in support of LLS’s goal of a world without blood cancers. The event, which took place on Saturday, March 12, at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center, exceeded both the total raised at the 2015 event and the goal set by organizers.
Washington-area business leaders came out in droves to support LLS, with nearly 2,000 guests enjoying entertainment by comedian Kathleen Madigan and musical group Barenaked Ladies, as well as an extensive silent auction, dinner and dessert. The night’s program included recognition of the 2016 Titans of Business & Philanthropy: Dr. Ivan Borrello, whose award was generously supported by Amgen, and BDO; and the 2016 James L. Eichberg Lifetime Achievement Award recipient, MorganFranklin’s C.E. Andrews. A moving mission moment by Kiernan Smith highlighted the memory of her husband Rob, who lost his battle to acute myeloid leukemia in 2012.
A new addition to the event was a Young Professionals ticket, created to give Washington’s millennial population the opportunity to attend the Ball, and help cultivate future generations of area business leaders. Young Professionals were able to view the mission moment and entertainment while enjoying a dessert buffet, wine and beer. 250 tickets were sold in the inaugural year of this program, with an opportunity for growth in 2017.
Top 2016 sponsors include: PhRMA, Presenting Sponsor; LIUNA Charitable Foundation, Partner in Hope; BDO & Amgen, Titan of Business & Philanthropy Sponsors; Baker Tilly, Mission Sponsor; Mercedes-Benz, Official Raffle Vehicle Sponsor; and American Airlines, Official Airline Sponsor.
